Mark 10:46-52

“And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Then many warned him to be quiet; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” So Jesus stood still and commanded him to be called. Then they called the blind man, saying to him, “Be of good cheer. Rise, He is calling you.””
‭‭Mark‬ ‭10:46-52‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

I find it funny that this demonstration of faith takes place in Jericho, which is where the faith of Rahab was shown in the book of Joshua. Both of these stories are great demonstrations of faith, and can actually be seen as pretty relatable. Rahab had never seen any Israelites before the two spies entered the walls of Jericho and had never personally seen any works of God in her lifetime. However, she knew the Israelites’ God was the one and only God. Joshua 2:9 ‘and she said to them “I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.”’ Notice in this verse how she doesn't say “your Lord” or “the Lord of Israel”, she states “the Lord”, as in he is the Lord of all mankind, including her. Even knowing that the Lord of Israel has sent the Israelites to destroy her country, she still realizes that their Lord is also her Lord. And through that understanding decides to hide two Israelite spies, not worrying about the danger that she is putting herself in from both her countrymen and the Israelite spies, because she realizes that they are servants of the Lord, and therefore her fellow servants. How incredible.  And this blind beggar is in a pretty similar situation. Because he is blind he has never seen any miraculous act of Christ, he has only heard of such acts. Yet when Jesus was leaving his city, he ferociously sought him out. He knew that this may be his only chance for him to receive something from Christ, and he knew that he was Lord. He shouts out “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And when people tell him to quiet down he shouts all the louder “Son of David, have mercy on me!” We may overlook it now because we obviously know this to be true but calling Jesus the Son of David was quite the statement for people during Jesus’s ministry, which may have been why people were telling him to quiet down. By stating that Jesus was the Son of David he was stating that Jesus was indeed the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. He knew that this was the Son of God. So he didnt care about what anybody else thought or what was going on around him, all he knew was that he needed Jesus, and this might be his only chance to get him. Another incredible story. So why is it then that unlike both Rahab and this blind beggar, we visible see God working in our lives everyday and we still have issues of having faith in him? What is holding us back? I think it is because we lack the desperation for Jesus that the blind beggar had, because it is when we are desperate for Jesus that we will have the most faith in him, and that is when he's able to do the most amount of work in our hearts to be more like his. So for the next week and maybe afterwards, I'm going to get down on my knees every morning and desperately call out to him in prayer, telling him how much I need him for this day and all my days.
