Luke 17:7-10

“Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.’”‭
Luke‬ ‭17:7-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

So often in life we look for rewards for the ways in which we serve. We look to get paid, to be commended, we tend to just want something. We often don't want to perform a task if there aren't any benefits for us at the end of it all. We feel that if we are serving we deserve something for our service. But that isn't true service. True service is serving even when there is no self-gain in what you are doing. It is where you are laying your wants down and seeking to serve in a way that is completely others centered. It doesn't matter whether or not you get anything because that isn't the reason why you are serving. As Christians we are all servants of Jesus Christ. We are all people serving him in order to help and minister to the people that have been placed in our lives. In a sense, Christ is our master. Now biblically it does say how technically Christ isn't our master but rather a brother and friend; however, he is our master in the sense that everything that we do we do for him because we are indebted to him for what he did for us by dying on the cross. How has given us eternity and washed away the penalties of our sin, and therefore we are to serve him to the best of our God given ability. Nothing that we could ever do on this Earth could pay back the debt that we owe Christ in our salvation. Therefore, we are completely undeserving of everything that he gives us and we owe him our lives in serving him in whatever way he would have us serve him. And as this verse kind of points out, just because you have a certain job in this world, doesn't mean that Christ will ask you to do things that you think you don't have to do. We think because of who we are that we are only supposed to serve in certain ways, but we are to serve in whatever way Christ would see fit to use us. During servant time on Wednesday and the time leading up until then I'm going to look for ways in which Christ would have me serve that I normally feel like would be something that I wouldn't have to do, because no matter what it is, if Christ asks me to do something I need to do it.
